Subject: Job Announcement: USDA Research Microbiologist
       (Swine AMR/microbial ecology)
Date: Wed, 24 Jun 2020 12:21:45 -0500

Hello colleagues,

My apologies for adding to your inbox. Please circulate the attached
position description to anyone interested.

Thanks!

The USDA, ARS, Food Safety and Enteric Pathogens Research Unit (FSEPRU) in
Ames, Iowa is seeking a permanent, full-time Research Microbiologist to
develop an innovative microbial ecology research program in pigs focused on
limiting microbiota dysbiosis that contributes to antimicrobial resistance
gene mobility; and identifying methods minimizing transfer of antimicrobial
resistance genes into foodborne pathogens, such as Salmonella. The successful
candidate will conduct research to evaluate effects of ecosystem disturbances
on swine gut microbiota, including interactions with Salmonella; and identify
or develop methods to limit dysbiosis contributing to antimicrobial resistance
gene transfer in the pig intestinal tract. The candidate will use cutting-edge
DNA sequencing and culturing techniques to characterize the swine intestinal
microbiota and antibiotic resistance gene reservoirs. Diverse sample types
will be explored, and phage, plasmid and genomic DNA will be interrogated for
understanding antimicrobial resistance gene context and mobility. The ultimate
goal of this research is to develop information and novel approaches to reduce
microbiota dysbiosis contributing to antimicrobial resistance gene mobility
and reduce transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes into foodborne pathogens.
The successful candidate will join a group of scientists conducting similar
research for other foodborne pathogens and food animals (cattle, poultry), and
workclosely with a swine immunologist and computational biologist on research
objectives. Collectively, the group works to increase information and
technologies needed to enhance food safety and limit antimicrobial resistance
in foodborne pathogens in the U.S. and around the world.
