Details of an exciting opportunity examining the genomic basis of
meat quality in beef cattle. Collaborative project between Teagasc
Ashtown & University College Dublin Ireland

Background: The muscle characteristics related to beef eating
quality, are quantitative traits, with contribution from multiple
genomic regions. Ireland is a leader worldwide in exploiting genetic
variation to improve meat eating quality across the whole herd.
Refinement of genome regions and identification of genomic features
associated with meat eating quality is a means to improve the
accuracy within breeding programmes. In a collaboration between
Teagasc and UCD, a PhD position is now available to identify
regulatory and functional elements associated with eating quality. We
are seeking an enthusiastic early career scientist to apply an
integromics approach to diverse but complementary biological datasets
(i.e. genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic) to better
understand the complex biochemical regulation of processes governing
the expression of beef quality and identify genomic features
controlling aspects of muscle biology relevant to product quality.
The opportunity is bioinformatics driven, but provides opportunities
to generate data in the lab as well. An RNA sequencing experiment
will be carried out to complement existing data, and in the final
phase of the project, biiological implications of candidate genome
features will be evaluated in the lab. The anticipated outcome will
be a panel of genome features functionally associated to meat quality
in bovine germplasm. Through their research programme, the student
will develop a multitude of skills in a rapidly developing scientific
area. The project is integrated with an industry-led technology
centre, Meat Technology Ireland, ensuring industry relevance and a
clear route to translation of research.

Requirements: Applicants should have a good primary degree (First or
Upper Second Class Honours), an interest in meat quality and
preferably an M.Sc. in an appropriate discipline (Omics or
Bioinformatics). The successful candidate should be highly self-
motivated and open to a multi-disciplinary project with extensive
industry interaction.
Award: The scholarship funding is €24,000 per annum and includes
University fees of up to a maximum of €6,000 per annum. It is tenable
for four years.

Award: The student will be registered at University College Dublin,
working under the supervision of Prof. Torres Sweeney and Dr Stafford
Vigors in association with Teagasc supervisors (Dr. Ruth Hamill, Dr.
Anne Maria Mullen and Dr. Noirin McHugh). The hosting research group
works on several aspects of genomics and transcriptomics, in relation
to animal science. Periods of laboratory and data analysis work will
be undertaken at Teagasc Ashtown, University College Dublin and
Teagasc Moorepark, Fermoy, Co. Cork. The Fellowship will start as
soon as possible when a suitable candidate is appointed.
