Subject: Computing short course and VISIONS III conference at
Iowa State University

In addition to the VISIONS III “ Star Gazing into the Galaxy of Animal
Genetics and Genomics” conference that was announced earlier, we will
also have a Computing short course and open seminars on animal breeding and
genetics prior to and after the VISIONS conference, respectively.
The full schedule and registration instructions are as follows:
1. Saturday May 16 – Tuesday May 19: Short course on “Modern Programming
(Julia) in Genomic Prediction”
by Hao Cheng (UC-Davis) and Rohan Fernando (Iowa State).

Course objectives: Provide an introduction to the programming language
Julia and how to use it to code the statistical methods listed below from
scratch
Mixed effects models with polygenic, maternal and permanent environment
effects
Use of pedigree information
Iterative methods for solving linear systems, e.g, Jacobi,
Gauss–Seidel, Gibbs
GBLUP and Bayesian alphabet
Variance component estimation
Single-step methods
Target Audience: Graduate students, post-docs, academic staff, industry
geneticists
Pre-requisites: Knowledge of quantitative genetics and mixed effects
models. Some prior programming experience
Course Structure: Lectures and practical components with hands-on
exercises.
2. Tuesday May 19 (6 PM) - Wednesday May 20: VISIONS III Conference.

3. Thursday May 21 – Friday May 22 (AM only): Post-conference open
seminars on Animal Breeding and Genetics by interested attendees of the
conference and/or short course (Mike Goddard and Julius van der Werf
confirmed). No registration needed but e-mail me if you are interested in
presenting a seminar (incl. topic).
So come spend a week at Iowa State University from May 16-22, for a full
week of engaging computational training, talks, discussions, and networking
related to animal breeding, genetics, and genomics. Note that you need to
register separately for the short course and the conference. No
registration needed for the post-conference open seminars.
For housing, a block of rooms have been blocked at the Gateway Hotel for
