Subject: Open Genomics Postdoc Position in USDA ARS
       Beltsville, MD, USA
Date: Sat, 05 Oct 2019 17:38:17 -0500

The USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Animal Genomics and Improvement
Laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland, is seeking a POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH
ASSOCIATE (Research Computational Biologist) for a TWO-YEAR APPOINTMENT.
Research emphasizes development of bioinformatics and genomics tools to
annotate the structure and function of the bovine genome and then apply
these datasets to accelerate genetic improvement, and discovery of genomic
features affecting economically important traits. The incumbent will
develop and customize pipelines for automation of data processing required
for discovering genetic (e.g. SNP, CNV) and epigenetic variations (e.g. DNA
methylation), as well as functional elements (e.g. enhancers and promoters)
using short and long read sequencing in cattle. The incumbent will then
develop better statistical methods to improve association studies with
quantitative trait locus (QTL) and enhance genetic prediction.

Scientists in AGIL have access to the National Dairy Database, which is the
largest collection of phenotypic, genetic, and genomic information about
dairy cattle in the world. Whole-genome DNA sequence data from both the
1000 Bull Genomes Project and ongoing in-house sequencing efforts (PacBio,
Nanopore and 10X Genomics Chromium linked reads) also are available for
analysis. With the advantageous location near national labs at USDA, NIH,
Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland, multiple groups have established
extensive collaboration between researchers in these institutions,
including Curt Van Tassell, Paul Vanraden, Congjun Li, John Cole, Derek
Bickhart, Ben Rosen, Li Ma, etc. The postdoc candidate will have a unique
opportunity to collaborate with these well-known groups of experts in
genetics and genomics.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in genetics, bioinformatics, computational
biology, statistics, computer science, or a related field. A Ph.D. earned
no earlier than 2015 is usually required. Knowledge of genome assembly,
population genetics, statistical genetics, complex trait mapping and/or
high throughput sequencing is a plus. Proficiency in programming in R,
Python, Perl, C/C++, Java and SAS is highly desired. Preference will be
given to candidates with a strong publication record, evidence of
substantial research productivity, and ability to successfully communicate
scientific information.

Salary is commensurate with experience (GS11 starting at USD $69,581 per
annum) plus benefits. Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents who meet
the criteria outlined in 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)(B) will be considered. You
can send an inquiry with CV, statement of interest and 2 references to Dr.
George Liu, Building 306, Room 111, 10300 Baltimore Avenue, Beltsville, MD
20705 or email (George.Liuusda.gov). USDA/ARS is an equal opportunity
provider and employer.

Thanks,

George
