Wageningen University & Research organizes a 5-day course, in the framework
of the African Chicken Genetic Gains (ACGG) project. Registration deadline
is October 3rd.

Course on applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to livestock
breeding

Ambition:

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are increasingly used in a variety of
livestock research applications. In this course, we will introduce recent
developments in the use of habitat distribution models and landscape
genomics as applied to livestock research in developing countries.

.Date: 14-18 October 2019

Location: ILRI Campus, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Target audience: Post-graduate (experience with R and bringing their own
laptop is required)

Course content:

The course contains a theoretical component supported by a strong practical
component. An introduction to the basic GIS tools will be provided through
the R software to understand and build functional and publication-grade
quality maps. Lectures and tutorials will then provide further in-depth
understanding on the use of different statistical models and their
application in habitat distribution modelling and landscape genomics.
Emphasis will be on understanding how domestic populations and breeds adapt
to their environment, and how environment can shape fitness and productive
performances of breeds.

Confirmed lecturers:

Dr. Elia Vajana , École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne
Dr. John Bastiaansen, Wageningen University & Research
Dr. Samson Leta, Addis Ababa University
María Lozano-Jaramillo, Wageningen University & Research

Cost

The total cost of the course is 625 USD. This amount covers accommodation*
(6 nights + breakfast), conference venue (including lunch), and other
logistics.

*If no accommodation is needed, the course fee is 115 USD.

Cancellations after October 6 will be charged full price.

Application

Please send an application no later than October 3 midnight (CET). In the
application, please include a short statement (250 words maximum) outlining
how your own studies and/or work will benefit from attending the present
course. Please send all applications to María Lozano-Jaramillo
(maria.lozanojaramillowur.nl).

For any further questions and clarifications on the course content, contact
María Lozano-Jaramillo (maria.lozanojaramillowur.nl).
