Subject: Vacancy: USDA's Animal Genomics and Improvement Laboratory
       seeking Research Leader
Date: Mon, 08 Jul 2019 21:32:04 -0500

Dear Colleagues-

USDA’s Animal Genomics and Improvement Laboratory (AGIL) in Beltsville,
MD, is searching for a Research Leader to assume duties as a senior
scientist and administrative head of the group. AGIL scientists are
involved in cutting-edge genomic science and animal physiology. The group
has a rich history of more than 100 years of groundbreaking research, from
pioneering work of Sewall Wright in the 1910s through the implementation
of genomic selection in the US dairy population by a team including Drs.
Paul VanRaden and Curt Van Tassell. This is a permanent, 12-month position
at the GS-14 or -15 level. Due to federal hiring rules, only US citizens
are eligible for consideration.

The permanent staff of 26.6 FTE includes 11 PhD scientists, laboratory and
research assistants, and administrative and IT support. Our staff is
supplemented by several postdoctoral scientists and many visiting
scientists and students. In-house resources include short- and long-read
sequencing capabilities, molecular biology facilities, substantial local
computing resources, and access to Ceres, ARS’s high-performance computing
cluster in Ames, IA. There is also a 120-cow research dairy equipped with
32 GrowSafe cells and a GreenFeed system located at the research center.
The Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB), holder of the National Dairy
Database, is located nearby in Bowie, MD. Ongoing collaborations with CDCB
provide access to the largest database of phenotype, pedigree, and
genotype information for dairy cattle in the world. AGIL also is a
participant in the 1000 Bull Genomes Project.

More information about the Laboratory may be found on the AGIL website:

Applications must be made through the USAJobs website:

Questions may be directed to me or to Dr. Howard Zhang, Director,
Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (E-mail:

Thank you,

John
