Dear All,

I would like to draw your attention to an exciting PhD project on
epigenomics in pig and chicken, at Wageningen University,
The Netherlands.

(text and link to apply available online:
https://www.wur.nl/...nd-pig.htm)

We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD candidate, with a clear interest
in one or more of the following research fields: epigenomics/genomics,
bioinformatics, developmental biology and comparative biology. The PhD
will be employed at a newly funded H2020 project Gene-SWitCH: "The
regulatory Genome of Swine and Chicken: functional annotation during
development". Gene-SWitCH aims to support the effort of the ongoing
Functional Annotation of ANimal Genomes (FAANG) consortium (FAANG.org), a
worldwide consortium with more than 350 contributors with the global goal
of establishing reference functional maps of domesticated animal genomes.
The specific objectives of Gene-SWitCH are: 1) to underpin and gain new
knowledge on the functional genomes of chicken and pigs during fetal
development and 2) to enable immediate translation of the archived
functional genome data to the pig and chicken industry. Gene-SWitCH
included several highly interconnected research lines which will be
performed in an intense collaborative effort between several European
laboratories.

The PhD candidate will be involved in identifying and characterizing
functional genome elements by means of state-of-the-art molecular assays
including DNA methylation (WGBS, RRBS), histone modification (ChIP-seq),
gene expression (RNA-seq), chromatin accessible (ATAC-seq) and genome
variation (WGS) assays. Specifically the PhD student will be involved
in optimizing and developing bioinformatics pipelines to analyse the
various molecular assays and in developing integrative and comparative
pipelines to detect and comprehend the molecular switches involved in
fetal development of pig and chicken and the evolutionary dynamic of
functional elements found between pig and chicken.

Supervisors:
- Prof. Martien Groenen
- Dr. Ole Madsen

All candidates should meet the following requirements: A Master's degree
in a relevant biological field (Genomics/epigenomics, Bioinformatics,
comparative biology, developmental biology or evolutionary biology)
or in a quantitative field (Statistics). The candidate should have:

- A proven affinity for working with and/or developing bioinformatics
  pipelines.
- A strong interest in comparative biological analysis and
  developmental biology.
- A strong interest in fundamental and applied research.
- Be creative and innovative.
- Good organisational and (written and spoken) communication skills in
  English, as well as a
- proven ability to collaborate with others.
- Willingness to travel internationally, to attend international project
meetings and conferences and visit other institutes.

We offer you a challenging job for a period of 4 years at an international
leading organization. The position is available within Wageningen
University & Research Animal Breeding and Genomics, that combines the
activities of Wageningen Livestock Research and Wageningen University
in the field of animal breeding and genomics. The organization has
good and flexible employment conditions, including good education and
training facilities for PhD students. Employment basis: Appointment
for 38 hours per week for a period of 1.5 years with extension of 2.5
years after successful evaluation. The gross salary is in according to
the Collective Labour Agreement of Wageningen University and first year
salary is =E2=82=AC 2.266,-per month rising to =E2=82=AC 2.879,- in the fou=
rth year.
