Physiological Genomics Faculty Position

The University of Tennessee, Department of Animal Science in Knoxville, TN
invites applications for a full-time, 12 month, tenure-track position at
the rank of Assistant Professor. Salary and rank are commensurate with
education, experience and qualifications.

Position Responsibilities: 60% AgResearch and 40% Teaching

Qualifications: Earned doctoral degree in Animal Science, Nutrition,
Physiology or a closely related field and significant experience with
genomics. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a
nationally/internationally recognized research program in an area with
relevance to production agriculture. Record of scholarly activity,
documented by publications in peerreviewed journals is essential. Post-
doctoral experience is desirable but not required. All applicants must be
authorized to work in the U.S. on a long-term basis.

Responsibilities and Expectations:

• Establish an independent translational or basic research program that
  utilizes current -omics techniques
• Develop an extramurally-funded AgResearch program (e.g., grants &
  contracts) • Author and publish scholarly, peer-reviewed original
  research articles
• Mentor MS and PhD students
• Teach core undergraduate coursesin Animal Anatomy and Physiology
  including ANSC 220
• Communicate using effective oral and written communication skills
• Participate in other activities of the Department of Animal Science
  and Institute of Agriculture, such as committee service and student
  recruitment

About the University and Department

The flagship campus of The University of Tennessee system has an enrollment
of more than 27,000 students and is located in Knoxville. The City of
Knoxville is a hidden gem with a beautiful and walkable downtown, varied
nightlife, active neighborhoods, and eclectic shopping and restaurants. UT
is located within easy driving distance to Asheville, Nashville, Atlanta,
and the Great Smoky Mountains. The Department of Animal Science focuses on
a diverse blend of applied and basic life sciences ultimately aimed at
enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of animal agriculture. The
department's activities are accomplished by its 29 faculty members and
numerous professionals and support staff on the Knoxville campus and at
locations across Tennessee. Approximately 600 undergraduate students are
enrolled in the department's Bachelor of Science degree program with
academic concentrations in animal industries, biosciences and preveterinary
medicine. Undergraduates participate in research and creative achievement
alongside the department’s MS and PhD students. Research programs in the
Department focus in the areas of animal health and well-being, nutrition,
physiological genomics and reproduction. Extension leads adult and 4-H
youth programs in beef and dairy cattle, goats, equine, poultry, sheep,
swine and environmental management. The Department of Animal Science has
strong collaborations with the College of Veterinary Medicine. Ample
opportunities are available for establishing collaborative and
interdisciplinary activities with faculty members in other departments, the
College of Veterinary Medicine, the Genome Science & Technology program as
well as personnel at the nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Research Resources

The Department of Animal Science is housed in the Brehm Animal Science
Building and has recently undergone a complete renovation. The Department
has access to ample resources for – omics research within UTIA and the UT
system, including the anticipated UTIA Genomics Center for Advancement of
Agriculture. The UTIA Genomics Hub located on the agriculture campus is a
multi-use facility that provides support for genomics, proteomics,
transcriptomics, and imaging. Multiple resources are also available across
campus as core facilities such as the Advanced Microscopy and Imaging
Center, Biological and Small Molecule Mass Spectrometry Core (BSMMSC),
Center for Environmental Biotechnology (CEB) Bioimaging Center, and UT
Genomics Core. Additional research resources exist at 10 UT AgResearch and
Education Centers across the state with support staff, including an
inventory of ~ 1000 mature beef cows, 92 drylot pens, 120 three-acre and 18
five-acre grazing paddocks. Two dairy research herds are also available with
associated production trait data. The ETREC-JARTU Unit, located within
walking-distance of the Department, is a state of the art facility with over
31,465 square feet of assignable space that includes environmentally
controlled animal rooms and surgical suites with the capability to house
poultry, swine, cattle, sheep, and other animals.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. A competitive
start-up package is available.
