 PAG XXI (Plant and Animal Genome Conference): The International Plant & Animal 
Genome XXI meeting is scheduled for January 12-16, 2013, in San Diego, CA, USA 
(see http://www.intlpag.org/). As usual, the aquaculture genomics community 
will gather for a 1.5 day workshop. The theme for this year's Aquaculture 
Workshop is: "Sowing the Storm: Reaping High Quality Genomic Data from the 
Next-Gen Whirlwind." With our plenary speakers this year, we hope to draw from 
the experience of other genomics research communities in techniques, analysis, 
and application of next-gen datasets to best harness the tremendous power of 
these evolving technologies to explain biological variations. Confirmed plenary 
speakers this year will be Lior Pachter of Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, 
Curt Van Tassell of USDA ARS, Gary Rohrer of USDA ARS, and Pat Schnable of Iowa 
State University.
 Aquaculture Genome workshop speakers to be determined, a message from the Chair 
(Dr. Eric Peatman): If you are interested in making an oral presentation, you 
must submit your abstract directly to the Aquaculture Workshop Chair, Dr. Eric 
Peatman (peatmer@auburn.edu) via e-mail by October 24, 2012 internal deadline. 
Please note that all abstracts (for both oral and poster presentations) must 
ALSO be submitted directly to PAG using the PAG website 
http://www.intl-pag.org/ (deadline: Nov 1). Abstracts being considered for an 
oral presentation will be reviewed by the committee, and those selected for 
oral presentations will be notified in mid-November. Abstracts will be judged 
on both the scientific quality of the abstract, and interest to USDA National 
Animal Genome Project (National Research Support Project NRSP-8) aquaculture
species stakeholders.
 PAG Aquaculture Travel Award Applications: The Aquaculture Genomics group of 
the NRSP-8 is pleased to announce the availability of a limited number of 
travel awards, of up to $1000, to support the attendance of graduate students
and postdoctoral fellows at PAG XXI. All full-time graduate students and
postdoctoral fellows who submit an abstract to the Aquaculture Workshop are
eligible for consideration with the following restrictions: a) travel award 
recipients from 2012 are not eligible in 2013; b) a maximum of two travel 
awards will be granted to a single PI's group c) travel award recipients 
should be prepared to give an oral presentation. Applicants should submit all 
the required items as listed below by the internal deadline October 24, 2012, 
through e-mail to Eric Peatman (peatmer@auburn.edu): 1) the abstract to be 
submitted to the PAG conference website, including the title and authors; 2) a 
statement of the anticipated costs for the applicant to attend the PAG meeting, 
including information on additional resources (if any) that will be available 
to support their attendance; and 3) Travel award applicants MUST also arrange 
for their supervisor to send an e-mail to Eric Peatman confirming their status 
as a current graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. Note: Please use the 
official PAG travel award form provided at http://www.intlpag.org/ under the 
Travel menu. Award selections will be made and awardees will be notified soon 
after the deadline. Awards will be paid after the meeting as a travel stipend.
 US-EU Animal Biotechnology Working Group conduct cyber infrastructure workshop: 
With the great leadership of Dr. Jeff Silverstein from USDA ARS and Dr. Lakshmi 
Matukumalli from USDA NIFA, and the EU counterparts, a workshop was conducted 
September 12-14 at Hinxton UK. During the workshop, iPlant cyber infrastructure 
training was provided by iPlant Initiative scientists. The attendees discussed 
the current challenges in bioinformatics and the possible solutions to meet 
such challenges facing the non-model animal genome researchers.
 Oyster Genome paper published in Nature: Congratulations to Dr. Guofan Zhang 
and his colleagues and to the entire oyster research community for the decoding 
of the entire genome of the pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. The paper was 
just published in Nature.
