Thanks to Dr. Sylvie Quiniou: As the organizer of the Plant and Animal Genome (PAG) Aquaculture Workshop that was held in San Diego January 14-15, 2012, Dr. Quiniou did a marvelous job. The Aquaculture Genome community thank you for your great dedication and efforts.

NRSP-8 National Animal Genome Project renewal is underway. The current phase of the NRSP-8 National Animal Genome Project is scheduled to end in September of 2013. The re-write team for NRSP-8 is led by Tom Porter and Milt Thomas, along with the various species coordinators and additional members of the re-write committee. Eric Peatman (peatmer@auburn.edu) of Auburn University and Mohamed Salem (Mohamed.Salem@mail.wvu.edu) of West Virginia University are representatives from aquaculture genome community. Contact them if you have any input or comments. The new draft objectives for NRSP-8 are as follows: 1) Advance the status of reference genomes for all species, including basic annotation of worldwide genetic variation, by broad sequencing among different lines and breeds of animals. 2) Develop strategies to identify and exploit genes and allelic variation that contribute to economically relevant phenotypes and traits, in part through improving functional annotation of the genomes of our species. 3). Facilitate analysis, curation, storage, distribution and application of the enormous datasets now being generated by next generation sequencing and related "omics" technologies with regard to animal species of agricultural interest.

The hurricane damaged NC State striped bass facility is rebuilt. In August 2011, Huricane Irene destroyed much of the physical infrastructure including several buildings at one of the two main breeding centers for striped bass and white bass broodstocks for the hybrid striped bass farming industry (N.C. Carolina State University Pamlico Aquaculture Field Laboratory). Through sustained emergency actions, the NCSU scientists were able to rescue large numbers of all of the special lines of striped bass and white bass and to restore all critical life support systems by September. The laboratory has been largely rebuilt and should be completed in time for full operation during the 2012 breeding season.

A special issue on Aquaculture Functional Genomics to be published: A Special Issue of the journal Comparative and Functional Genomics, on the topic "Aquaculture-Related Functional Genomics Research", is scheduled for publication in January 2013. The Call-for-Papers is posted on the Comparative and Functional Genomics website (http://www.hindawi.com/journals/cfg/osi/). The guest editors of this Special Issue are Matt Rise, John Liu, and Mohamed Salem. The guest editors, along with Comparative and Functional Genomics, invite the submission of original research and/or review articles in the area of aquaculture functional genomics. The manuscript submission deadline for this Special Issue is 17 August 2012. For additional information, please see the above Call-for-Papers.

The 1st International Conference on Integrative Salmonid Biology: The 1st International Conference on Integrative Salmonid Biology will be held in Oslo, Norway, June 17 - 20, 2012. See next page for more information.

International Symposium on Aquaculture Genetics XI (ISGA XI): The International Symposium on Aquaculture Genetics XI (ISGA XI) will be held June 24-30, 2012 at the Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center, Auburn University, Alabama, USA. Sessions are planned in the following areas: 1) Quantitative Genetics and Selective Breeding; 2) Biotechnology (Polyploidy, Sex Reversal and Breeding, Genetic Stem Cell Applications; 3) Transgenics; 4) Ethics, Food Safety and Environmental Risk of Genetic Enhancement Programs; and 5) Applied Genomics (Marker Assisted Selection and Whole Genome Selection). The keynote speaker will be Jeremy Taylor, Professor and Wurdack Chair in Animal Genomics, Division of Animal Sciences, University of Missouri lecturing on Applied Genomics to Accelerate Genetic Improvement Programs. Details, registration information and updates can be found at http://www.ag.auburn.edu/fish/the-international-symposiumon-genetics-in-aquaculture-xi-at-auburn-university/ If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact the conference Chairman, Dr. Rex Dunham (dunhara@auburn.edu).
