MAP USAGE GOALS
![]()
The purpose of gene mapping is to be able to locate the genes controlling inherited traits and diseases. Gene mapping is currently playing a large role in the animal science area. Not only have scientists discovered a gene factor for PSE pork (stress susceptible hogs), but they are currently identifying genes for litter size, growth, backfat, feed efficiency, and loin eye area. This break-through will be great for pork producers. They will ultimately be able to develop outstanding breeding stock to produce improved meat quality. One way researchers have been trying to improve production traits is by identifying new genes from the linkage map. For instance, a gene has been located which greatly influences the litter size in hogs. The presence of this gene, referred to as ESR, can be tested for by scientists to help determine which hogs will produce larger litters. With this knowledge gained, producers will soon be able to raise fewer sows and still produce more pigs per litter than before. This will not only reduce the cost to the producer, but it will also help make their operations more efficient.
