Subject: PhD positions in molecular genetics
Date: Mon, 07 May 2012 21:47:39 -0500

Two PhD positions are available (starting Fall 2012) in the Department of
Animal and Food Sciences at University of Delaware for enthusiastic and
self-motivated applicants to work on studying transcriptional differences
between birds showing high and low feed efficiency (FE) phenotypes. Feed
costs in broiler chickens production account for up to 70% of the total
production costs. The long-term goal in this project is to understand the
molecular genetic basis of variation in FE phenotype, which will be of
particular importance in characterizing fundamental basis of optimal FE
and in discovering biomarkers or candidate genes for FE.

The successful candidates will utilize state-of-the-art genomics methods
and technologies to construct cDNA libraries for Next-Generation
Sequencing (NGS) in an Illumina Hi-seq 2000 sequencer and will use
advanced statistical and computational methods to analyze NGS data in the
high-performance computing cluster at University of Delaware.

Candidates with background in animal science, biology, genetics or
bioinformatics with solid understanding of statistics and experience in
analyzing large data sets are preferred.

Successful candidates will receive a monthly generous stipend and will
also benefit from 100 percent tuition reduction. Deadline for application
is May 18. Applicants should send a letter of interest; a CV; GRE and
TOEFL scores (if foreign students whose primary language is not English)
and name and contact information of 3 references to Dr. Behnam Abasht
(abashtUDel.edu).

The University of Delaware is an equal opportunity employer, which
encourages applications from minority group members and women.
