HEDMARK UNIVERSITY COLLEGE Faculty of Agriculture & Natural Sciences (in co-operation with Sparebanken Hedmark) Position available: PROFESSOR OF MOLECULAR GENETICS Full description: In connection with its relocation to the Hamar Campus and opening of the new Biotechnology Building, the Faculty of Agriculture & Natural Sciences is proud to announce a vacancy for a Professor in Molecular Genetics, needed for early appointment. The position has been made possible trough financial contributions/fundings from Sparebanken Hedmark. The Faculty The Faculty of Agriculture & Natural Sciences, now located at Blæstad in the rural surroundings of Hamar city, will be relocated to the Hamar Campus (in the citycenter of Hamar) where a new "Biotechnology" Building with offices and laboratories for teaching and research is under construction. The faculty will welcome students to its new facilities in August 2005. At present the Faculty of Agriculture & Natural Sciences at Hedmark University College has 1 professor, 7 associate professors, 5 lecturers, 2 research associates, 3 PhD-students and 4 technicians. There are ca. 180 students enrolled in five main 3-year bachelor programs: * Biotechnology - Environmental Biotechnology - Environmental Management - Organic Agriculture - Agricultural Techniques Hedmark University College's Strategic Plan for 2004-2006 prioritizes Biotechnology, both as a research-based program of study and an area for research and development, preferably in cooperation with other faculties within the college and/or with local biotechnology companies. The municipality of Hamar, along with regional businesses, is sponsoring a new Biotechnology Building that will also house offices and laboratories of several biotechnology-related businesses and organizations in addition to those required by our faculty for teaching and research purposes. The regional bank, Sparebanken Hedmark, is sponsoring this professorship in biotechnology at the college. The position will be initially financed for three years by Sparebanken Hedmark, and the college's governing board has established this professorship as a permanent position. Concurrent with the opening of the new Biotechnology Building in Hamar, the faculty plans to launch a 2-year Masters of Science program in Applied Biotechnology. Molecular genetics, bioprocess technology, and commercialization of biological research will be emphasized areas of specialization in this program. The position The professorship will have a particular responsibility to strengthen the faculty's research in molecular genetics. Model organisms under study may include mammals or fish, microorganisms associated with them and/or microbes related to food safety and quality. The biotechnology firms GENO (cattle breeding and insemination technology), Norsvin (svine breeding), Aquagen (breeding of Atlantic salmon and trout for aquaculture), Cryogenetics (technology development for viable freezing/thawing of fish milk and animal semin) and Geninova (QTL-based fish breeding) will be closely associated with the Biotechnology Building in Hamar, either directly as tenants or via the newly established partner firm Biobanken (a laboratory for the storage and analysis of biological material from cattle, fish, svine et al.) that will be located there. The Biotechnology building will also house the regional office of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. The envisioned role for this professorship is to foster collaboration and synergy between the Faculty of Agriculture & Natural Sciences and these external partners. Bioinformatics, identification of quantitative trait loci, molecular genetics of fertility, marker-assisted breeding, STR-analysis, or DNA-based animal- or fish-borne or food-related microbe identification are all examples of research areas the faculty wishes to establish and develop; the applicant's research area and expertise should closely match one or more of these areas of specialization. Persons with additional experience in the commercialization of biotechnological research, whether by establishing a business, by securing intellectual property rights by patenting or by licensing IP rights, are especially encouraged to apply. Scientific qualifications commensurate with international and/or national standards for the respective discipline are required. Hedmark University College elaborates this requirement thusly: Norwegian doctoral degree in the respective field of specialization, alternatively competence at a similar level documented by scholarly activities of the same breadth and quality. Furthermore, scientific articles published in internationally recognized journals, or other scientific productivity that reflects the candidate's thorough comprehension of his/her own discipline and insight into related fields. Emphasis will be placed on the candidate's scholarly production during the past six years to ensure that it is of an extent and quality that indicates continued scientific activity at a professorial level. The candidate's ability to initiate and supervise research, international collaboration and administrative experience will also be emphasized. In addition, the applicant must document pedagogical qualifications in the form of practical pedagogical education or some other relevant pedagogical education. Alternatively, documented practical experience as an instructor can serve as an equal substitute for this requirement. Applicants who have been short-listed will be invited for interviews and a demonstration of their pedagogical ability, usually in the form of a trial lecture. Short-listed applicants will also be invited to present a seminar outlining their current research and future research plans. The professor is to be jointly responsible for disciplinary matters together with other academic staff in the faculty. The professor is required to contribute to teaching activities in the relevant curricula and to assist in further developing the programs of study, including continuing education. The professor is expected to secure external financing to develop and maintain a research program in his/her field of expertise that meets or exceeds international standards. The professor is to supervise BSc-students, MSc-students, PhD-students and research fellows in his/her discipline. The professor must also participate in administrative activities. Both Norwegian citizens and international candidates are encouraged to apply. The successful applicant is expected to have excellent communication skills in written and spoken English. It is also imperative that the applicant maintain an international collaborative research network, regardless of his/her nationality. The working language and language of instruction at the college is mainly Norwegian. Salary etc. The position as professor is remunerated according to wage levels 62 to 86 on the Norwegian State salary scale, with gross salary from NOK 437.600 to NOK 778.300 a year. In Hedmark University College professors normally have been remunerated according to wage level 62 to72 (NOK 437.600 - 529.100). For especially qualified candidates higher remuneration can be considered. Two per cent of wages will be deducted each month by the Norwegian State as an obligatory premium to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. Within the application deadline, each applicant must send 3 sets of their: - Academic work - published or unpublished - that has relevance to the evaluation of the applicant's qualifications by the evaluation committee. - A description of all the scholarly activity that the applicant feels is most significant and to which he/she feels the evaluation committee should pay particular attention. This description should not normally refer to more than 15 publications, but other scholarly activity that has relevance to the evaluation of the applicant's qualifications may also be mentioned. - A list of all publications with bibliographical references. The candidates may comment on individual entries on the publication list. Joint publications and other scholarly activity will be evaluated. If it is deemed difficult to identify the contributions from individuals in a joint collaboration, applicants may be asked to submit a short descriptive summary of his/her specific contributions.
