Notes on AnGenMap Development
The origin
The AnGenMap discussion mailing list was started in 1993
on Iowa State University's Vincent Unix system using mail forward by an
account alias to serve the AnGenMap list mailing.
The transit
In late 1998 the list was transferred to a SmartList Mailing
Listserv customized on a DEC Unix system, where handling of postings,
subscription / unsubscription and other list maintenance functions were
automated. During the years 2000-2005, web interfaces to the list
were developed to increase the user transparency and minimize the management
tasks. Spam filters were implemented over time and several patches were added
to take care some of the listserv management routines.
The tools
In the spring of 1999, a web based member directory was developed,
coupling with the listserv to handle some of the user requests and membership
management routines. In 2007 the system was given an overhaul for better
security, easy management of the list. The new utilities include user
profile manager, allowing users to list alternative emails for posting to
the list; a web post - an alternative to emails for direct posting to
the AnGenMap list; etc. The most recent tool added in 2010 is a
file share platform for members
to share files that are not allowed as email attachment on AnGenMap.
