Subject: Position Announcement Junior Professorship Genetics of
       Functional Traits in Livestock
Date: Thu, 19 Jan 2017 09:42:12 -0600

The Faculty of Natural Sciences III, Institute for Agricultural and
Nutritional Sciences, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany,
invites applications for a

 Junior Professorship (W1)
“Genetics of Functional Traits in Livestock”
 (tenure track)

The candidate should represent the specific field of Genetics of Functional
Traits in research and teaching at the Institute of Agricultural and
Nutritional Sciences.

The suitable candidate for this position is expected to work on the
development and application of methods for genetic improvement of complex
functional traits in livestock, predominantly dealing with the species cattle
and/or swine. The research projects should contribute to the aim of balancing
the needed production level against an animal welfare respecting expression
of functional traits, especially for longevity, resource efficiency, health,
and genetics of animal behavior. To achieve this goal, modern approaches are
to be applied for research based on molecular findings (omics technologies)
and linked with methodology from quantitative genetics. A focus should be on
field studies. Additionally, farm animal experimental facilities are provided
through the Agricultural and Nutritional Research Station Merbitz for the
species swine, chicken and small ruminants. The candidate is expected to have
a proven scientific record with peer-reviewed publications and should have
extensive experience in the planning, conducting and analysis of scientific
experiments on the basis of molecular data using state-of-the-art methodology.
A prerequisite is profound knowledge in molecular genetics and biometry, but
also knowledge of livestock housing systems under practical farm conditions.
Teaching duties will be in the field of livestock sciences as well as in the
Master program in bioinformatics.

Topics of the animal science research of other professorships at the
institute are behavioural physiology, stress biology, genome analysis and
animal breeding plans, animal nutrition including feed sciences, nutritional
diseases and dietetics. The candidate`s expertise should complement these
fields. Further duties of the successful applicant are listed in Article 34
of the University Act of Saxony-Anhalt (Hochschulgesetz des Landes Sachsen-
Anhalt). Professors at the W1 level are offered an initial three-year
contract. After a positive evaluation, the contract can be extended for
a further three years. Upon a final positive evaluation, together with
documentation that the other requirements of the post have been fulfilled,
a tenured professorship position will be offered.

The Martin Luther University seeks to increase the proportion of females

professional and family arrangements. Physically handicapped applicants will
be favoured if they are equally qualified. Applications should include a
cover letter, curriculum vitae, academic certificates, a description of
professional career, list of publications, record of acquired research
grants, and teaching record.

A short resume of future research interests, concepts for research
collaboration with other groups, as well as teaching activities is also
requested.

The complete application should be sent both electronically by e-mail
(single, integrated pdf file less than 5 MB) as well as in paper form
no later than 2nd February 2017 to the following address:
