PAG Abstracts due October 1, 2008: Plant and Animal Genome XVII
Conference will be held January 10-14, 2009 Town & Country Convention
Center, San Diego, California. The abstracts are due October 1, 2008.
Please submit your abstract using the Internet (http://www.intl-pag.org/).
For Aquaculture abstracts, please submit as posters. Speakers for the
Aquaculture workshop will be selected by the executive committee from
the poster abstracts. Dr. Yniv Palti, the Organizer, will contact you
if your paper is selected for oral presentation.
Aquaculture Workshop will be held Saturday - Sunday (January 10-11,
2009).
The Aquaculture social and posters reception will be held Saturday
evening.
Joint NRSP-8 Animal Genome Plenary Session Planned this year:
This year, a joint Animal NRSP-8 session is planned featuring
distinguished plenary speakers between 1 pm and 5 pm on Sunday.
Please make plans to attend (please note that this is a science session,
not the NRSP-8 business meeting).
Aquaculture Genomics Travel Awards: The Aquaculture Species
Group is pleased to announce the availability of a limited number of Travel
Bursaries, of up to $1,000, to support the attendance of graduate students
and postdoctoral fellows at PAG. Every graduate student and postdoctoral
fellow who registers for the PAG meeting and submits an Abstract to the
Aquaculture Workshop is eligible for consideration. Applications should be
submitted by E-mail to Yniv Palti (yniv.palti@ars.usda.gov) and include the
following items. A) the Title and Authors of the submitted Abstract, B) a
statement of the anticipated costs for the applicant to attend the PAG
meeting, and a statement of additional resources (if any) that will be
available to support their attendance. Applicants MUST also arrange for
their supervisor to send an E-mail to Yniv Palti confirming their status as a
graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The travel awardees will be
selected by the executive committee from the poster abstracts submitted
as aquaculture posters.
Nominations of new USDA Genome Coordinators due: While scientists
are waiting on approval for our NRSP8 project renewal for the next five
years, nominations for the species coordinators for the next five
years (2009 -2013) are needed. To nominate an individual for the Swine,
Horse, Poultry, Cattle/Sheep, Aquaculture, and Bioinformatics
Coordinators positions. Please make sure that your nominee has agreed
to the nomination before you submit one. Please forward your nominee's
name and complete contact information to Dr. Muquarrab Qureshi via
email to mqureshi@csrees.usda.gov by September 15, 2008. Feel free to
contact Dr. Muquarrab Qureshi, mqureshi@csrees.usda.gov if you have
any questions.
New Resources for Shrimp Genome Researchers: Genetics maps
have been developed and published for several species of shrimps
including Staelens et al (2008: Genetics 179: 917-925) with a map for P.
monodon, with markers for sex in that species; the latest map produced
for L. vannamei by Zhang et al (2006: Genetica 131: 37-49); maps for P.
chinensis (Li et al 2006 Aquaculture 261: 463-472) and M. japonicus (Li et
al 2003 Aquaculture 219: 143-156). SNP maps are being developed at
Iowa State University. Clemson University has produced a good quality
fosmid library from a male Penaeus monodon. The library is of good
quality, and comparable to the fosmid library Clemson produced for L.
vannamei earlier this year in conjunction with Hollings Marine Laboratory.
For more information, please contact Shrimp Genome Coordinator, Dr.
John Benzie (joben@psb.ugent.be).
Endowed Chair in Marine Genomics Position Available in Charleston:
Endowed Chair in Marine Genomics Position is available at Marine
Biomedicine and Environmental Sciences Center. Applications are invited
for the Endowed Professorship in Marine Genomics at the Medical
University of South Carolina (MUSC) through its Marine Biomedicine and
Environmental Sciences Center (www.musc.edu/mbes). This is one of two
endowed appointments to be made within the South Carolina Center of
Economic Excellence (www.sccoee.org/) in the Marine Genomics program
being developed in partnership between the College of Charleston and the
Medical University of South Carolina. The appointment will be made at the
level of Associate Professor or Professor. The Marine Genomics Program
in Charleston is an integrated, highly collaborative effort that brings
together over 40 faculty, students and staff from the College of
Charleston, the Medical University of South Carolina, the South Carolina
Department of Natural Resources, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration and the National Institute of Standards and Technology on
the Fort Johnson marine campus. The Marine Genomics program is
focused on applying genomic tools to increase understanding of the
interactions of marine organisms with their environment and the
relationship between the oceans and human health. The successful
applicant will have an earned doctorate (MD, DVM, or PhD in biology or
chemistry), a demonstrated track record as a scholar in a collaborative
and collegial setting, and programmatic support from competitive
extramural funding sources. Extensive experience in the broad field of
genomics including proteomics and bioinformatics is essential. Familiarity
with the mechanisms for enhancing research value through economic
development (e.g., intellectual property, interaction with relevant
businesses, translational research activities, etc.) is an important
attribute that will build on the South Carolina Centers of Economic
Excellence Program. Experience as a research team leader/program director
is highly desirable as well as a successful history in mentoring students
and fellows. The appointee will be expected to: 1) develop a strong
extramurally funded programmatic base for marine genomics 2)
synergistically work with the companion Endowed Chair in Marine
Bioinformatics at the College of Charleston
(http://www.cofc.edu/biology/hiring.html#informatics) and researchers
from partner institutions within the Hollings Marine Laboratory (HML) 3)
provide academic leadership to the Marine Genomics Program
(www.marinegenomics.org) in Charleston 4) take a leadership role in
development of the SC Marine Genomics Consortium
(http://www.genome.clemson.edu/activities/projects/marineGenomics/) 5)
integrate marine genomic research activities with the NOAA Center of
Excellence in Oceans and Human Health at HML
(www.eol.ucar.edu/projects/ohhi/) and 6) integrate appropriate clinical and
basic science research on the medical campus with that of marine
genomics on the marine campus.
Interested individuals may get further information from Dr. Eric R. Lacy
